CURRICULUM VITAE
       
1957 Born in New York. Mother costume-and set designer, father writer.
  1970   Family moves to Hamburg, Germany.
  1977   After finishing school, Marek studies illustration in Paris for a period of two years.
  1979   Begins working free-lance for several newspapers and magazines in Paris.
  1981   Marek moves back to Hamburg where he begins with oil-painting.
  1982   First group show.
  1984   First major one-person exhibition.
First series of paper-cuts.
  1985   Begins work on the series of small sculptures "Morisken" which are cast in bronze.
  1986   First lithographs printed at Atelier Franck Bordas, Paris.
  1988   Butoh dance and the german Tanztheater have a strong impact on Mareks work;
he begins sketching during performances and visits to the theatre.
  1990   The photoseries "Posierte Tänze" is acquired by the German Dance Archive, Cologne.
Marek spends several days sketching during the rehearsals of "Iphigenie auf Tauris"
by Pina Bausch and her company in Wuppertal.
  1992   First engravings
  1994   Two sketchbooks are included in the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center.
  1995   First silkscreen prints.
Designs posters for the "Theater im Zimmer"/Hamburg, for plays by Albee, Fassbinder, Schwab.
  1996   Designs posters for the "Folkwang Tanz Studio"/Essen, for productions by Goldin, Sieczcarek, Limón, Horn, Linke.
First representation at the "Art Cologne" art fair.
  1997   Participation in the "Renaissance Project" for the Aids Benefit, Hamburg.
  1998   Artist-in-Residence Grant by the ISART Foundation, Montréal, Canada.
  1999   Several art societies in Germany show his newest paper-cuts.
  2000   Edition of the "Hands".
Book illustrations.
  2001   First "Cardboard Cuts".
  2002   Begins a series of now more than 100 artist-books with original paper-cuts.
  2003   > Headsets <, a series of watercolor paintings.
Begins collaboration with bookbinder Christian Klünder, Berlin, for several artists books.
  2004   Artist Grant at the Sylt- Quelle, Sylt/Germany.
Participation in the > Wissenschafts Sommer Sylt <, a science symposium, posterdesign and installation.
Book project > PRÄPARATE < for the edition sutstein, Berlin, in collaboration with the writer
Claudius Hagemeister.
  2005   Twenty artist books for the > Lyrik-Tage < (poetry festival) in Sylt.
  2006   Participation in the book project > Vokabelkrieger <, Hybriden Verlag/Berlin, which includes works by 25 artists and writers on the theme of “Water”, presented in the Antje Wachs Gallery, Berlin.
One month studio residency in Oostende/Belgium
  2007   Completion of the anatomy atlas > Whilst every effort has been taken to remove all bones
some remain <.
First collaboration with papermaker Gangolf Ulbricht, Berlin.
  2008   Presentation of the third volume of > Vokabelkrieger<,
published by Hybriden Verlag/Berlin, the theme this time being "Martyrs"
  2009   Presentation of the book > Elf Kleine Dressuren <,consisting of eleven texts and eleven paper-cuts,in collaboration with the writer Monika Rinck, edited by Edition Sutstein, Berlin.
  2009   The Bibliothèque Nationale and the Bibliothèque Forney, both based in Paris, acquire works
for their collections.
  2010   Official presentation of the book > Elf Kleine Dressuren < in a conference held with Monika
Rinck, Liesl Ujvary and Max Marek at the Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz, Berlin.
During the two-day colloquium LE LIVRE AU CORPS, organized by the Art History Department
of the University of Paris, a lecture on the books >Terra Incognita<, >Implantate< and
>Maelstrom< is held by Anna Rykunova.
  2010   Guest of Honor at the >3 ème Biennale Internationale des Livres d´Artiste<
in the City of Dives-sur-Mer, Normandy.
The book > MAELSTROM < is selected in the competition > ABOT - Artists Books on Tour < in Vienna and will be presented in a group show with other selected books in the museums of applied arts in Vienna, Prag and Ljubljana.
